Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day!

Back in 1970 the very first “Earth Day” was celebrated.  Earth Day was started to create awareness about the pollution that was occurring on our planet, and to get people to make more eco-friendly choices in their lives. At CJ’s Hearth and Home we’re celebrating Earth Day by highlighting some of the eco-friendly products that we offer our customers! We offer a large variety of recycled granite products in our store.  Granite is a high quality stone that many homeowners choose to use in their bathrooms and kitchens.  This strong rock is beautiful and durable.  While companies are cutting the slabs of granite to create counter tops, there is always granite that is “waste”.  All of that beautiful rock that is cut away and not used is tossed to the side.  We’ve found a great way to use that “waste”, though – with our recycled granite pieces. Recycled Granite Fire Pit One of our most popular pieces is our recycled granite wood fire pit.  This is a DIY project that usually takes a weekend to do.  Our beautiful pieces of granite are sent to you on a pallet, ready to be stacked into a beautiful, durable, and functional fire pit.  One side of the granite is polished with a pleasing shine, the others are naturally rough and rugged.  You get a mix of color – giving it a really great earthy feel.  This would be a beautiful centerpiece to your backyard gathering place.  Friends and family could gather around this for decades to come. This beautiful fire pit comes in a gas alternative, as well as a square design.    ...
Asparagus & Bacon Popover – Recipe

Asparagus & Bacon Popover – Recipe

Spring is in the air!  Today we are enjoying a beautiful 60 degree spring day.  Has spring sprung at your house, too?  If so … have your asparagus started sprouting up?  We won’t be able to harvest the spears for about another month, but seeing them sprout up has us all searching for some good asparagus recipes.  We found this one, from Kevin Lynch over at Closet Cook and it looks DELICIOUS! Ingredients 1 pound asparagus, trimmed and cut into 1 inch pieces 4 slices bacon, cut into 1 inch pieces 1 leek, thinly sliced 1 tablespoon butter 1/2 cup milk, warm 3 large eggs, room temperature 1/2 cup flour salt and pepper to taste 1 cup gruyere, shredded Directions Bring a pan with 1 inch of water to a boil, add the asparagus and cook until it turns bright green. Rinse the asparagus under cold water and pat dry. Cook the bacon in a cast iron skillet over medium heat, and set aside on paper towels to drain reserving the grease in the pan. Add the leeks to the pan, saute until tender, about 2-4 minutes, set aside and turn off the heat. Add the butter to the skillet and let it melt. Mix the milk, eggs, flour, salt and pepper and pour it into the pan. Sprinkle the asparagus, bacon, leeks and the cheese over the batter in the pan. Transfer the pan to a preheated 425 F oven and bake until puffed and golden brown, about 15-20 minutes.   Have you considered using soapstone instead of cast iron?  Our soapstone products are incredible and would work...
Fire Pit Safety During a Drought

Fire Pit Safety During a Drought

Between the wildfires and the drought, is it safe to have a fire feature in California?   Our answer? Yes, if you choose the appropriate type of fire feature.   Right now California is in crisis.  They are experiencing the worst drought they’ve ever encountered. Because of that drought, wildfires are sweeping across the state – burning four times more acreage than past years.  These conditions mean that one small spark could start a new wildfire – putting homes, people, and animals in danger.  For this reason, we’d recommend not using a wood burning fire feature in these dry areas.   Wood, with it’s spicy aroma is a favorite of backyard bonfires.  Gathering friends around and roasting marshmallows, while listening to the snap and crackle of the wood is the stuff of summer dreams.  With that snap and crackle, though, sparks sometimes fly.  A spark guard can help with that, but the only sure fire way to not have any issues, is to not use wood. Gas fire bowls and fire pits do not have sparks.  They easily turn on with a flip of a switch – and turn off the same way.  There is no pouring water over the flames to put it out.  There is no worry that the smoldering coals will relight after you go in the house.  On top of that, gas fire pits are easy to maintain.  No soot or cleaning out ashes.  It’s really a win-win situation for Californians.   But what about the marshmallows?  Is it safe to roast marshmallows over a gas fire pit? Our answer: Yes, it is safe to roast them over it, but we wouldn’t...
Build Your Own Fire Side Retreat Like Courteney Cox

Build Your Own Fire Side Retreat Like Courteney Cox

Actress, producer, and director, Courteney Cox, has a beautiful home in Malibu, California.  It’s her retreat from the hecticness that is Hollywood.  She’s spent a lot of time helping to decorate it, and one of her favorite places there is the outdoor banquette with the fire table.  Her little fire side retreat is where she has her coffee in the morning … and we can see why!  Not only does it look comfortable and toasty warm – but look at that view! We can’t help you get that view, but we can show you how you can get a fire table that will keep you toasty warm, and we’ll show you how you can make your own outdoor sofa out of pallets!   First, we need a fire table.   CJ’s has a nice selection of DIY fire tables.  Don’t get discouraged by the DIY title – they really aren’t that hard to create.  For our Courteney Cox look, though, I’ve chosen a fire table that you won’t have to build.  You can customize the LaCosta Del Rio Fire Table to fit your outdoor decor needs.  Choose different colors of finish on the table, and different color fire glass to go in the burners.  The LaCosta Del Rio is easy to set up, which means you will be able to gather around it even faster!         Second … we need a banquette!  You can purchase an outdoor sectional sofa from Pottery Barn if you’d like, and they really do have some beautiful ones, but we’d like to show you great way to recycle old pallets into...
Create An Outdoor Kitchen With A Fireplace Like Reese Witherspoon!

Create An Outdoor Kitchen With A Fireplace Like Reese Witherspoon!

Oscar winner, Reese Witherspoon, put her 14 million dollar home up for sale last year.  When she did, we were able to take a sneak peek, and we were totally delighted by her design style.  It seemed to be much in line with her fashion style.  Comfortable.  Sophisticated.  Family Centered. Although her home was gorgeous, I want to center on her backyard patio space.  She had a beautiful outdoor fireplace surrounded by lush greenery.  In front of the fireplace sat a family size table with rattan chairs.  And off to the side a built in grill and full outdoor kitchen.  Amazing.  It was comfortable and cozy feeling, making it a great place for family and friends to gather. You can create a similar gathering place in your backyard.  Here are our suggestions to get an outdoor living space like Reese Witherspoon!     First, we need to find the focal point of her outdoor decor – which is her outdoor fireplace. The Aspen Fireplace & Grill combo looks similar to hers. The lines of this fireplace mimic those of Reese’s, and fit in with the Spanish feel of her home. The double wall construction of this fireplace allows the outside of it to be cool to the touch, while the inside reaches high temperatures.   Use the built in grill to cook over wood.       The second major part of her outdoor decor is the full outdoor kitchen.   Swiss Grills has an entire line of built in grills and components that will allow you to create your outdoor kitchen to your specifications.  Grills, sinks, ice makers, and more.       The Third...
Decorate Your Mantel For Spring!

Decorate Your Mantel For Spring!

Spring is finally here!  Well … the calendar says it’s here, however I think Mother Nature forgot.  It’s snowing right now.  Maybe if we THINK SPRING and start decorating for it, it will show up?  We can hope! People decorate their mantels for Christmas, but how many of you do something special for other times of year?  This is a great time to brighten up your home with joyful colors and flowers – celebrating the end of the winter doldrums. 1. You don’t need to spend hours creating perfection. I find mismatched items charming.  Take these different colored and shaped vases on this mantel.  Such a simple mantel decor, that it only takes you moments to set it up.  It makes you feel Spring in the air with the bright pops of color mixed with the scent of fresh cut flowers.  Most of us have a collection of mismatched vases in our cupboards.  If not, the dollar store sells them on the cheap.   2. Hit up the thrift store. Take some tips from Roeshel at DIY Show Off.  She hit up the thrift store for cute bunny figurines, then spray painted them white.  You could also look for fake eggs, nesting material, odd shaped bottles, and a bird cage while you are there.  She’s put all these different pieces together, but it doesn’t look cluttered.  It fills you with a sense of spring and Easter just by seeing it!   3. Display your collections. Lucy at Craftberry Bush used her collection of vintage tea cups to decorate her mantel for spring.  She filled them with nesting, faux eggs, and fresh cut flowers.  She,...
Get a Fireplace like Kim & Kanye!

Get a Fireplace like Kim & Kanye!

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West recently purchased a 20 million dollar mansion that has two swimming pools, two spas, a vineyard … and some gorgeous fireplaces!   Most of us can’t afford a 20 million dollar mansion, but our homes are OUR mansions, none the less.  A beautiful fireplace makes a statement in any room.  Not only is it a focal point, but it is a source of heat (and sometimes romance) as well!   If you’d like a fireplace similar to Kim and Kanye’s, check out our suggestions below!     The Radiant Fireplace is a wood burning fireplace.  It’s 36″ tall, comes fully insulated and has andirons with it.  You can choose to get glass doors on it, although Kim & Kanye don’t have doors on theirs.  When choosing your liner, choose the white herringbone if you’re looking to replicate the Kimye fireplace.     Now that you have a fireplace that looks like Kim & Kanye’s … let’s move on to a mantel. The Arched Sebastian mantel has the look of cut stone, but is actually cast stone.  The arched leg options help to make this look more like Kim & Kanye’s fireplace.   To finish off the Kimye look, nab these gorgeous silver pillows and pair them with these black ones – all by Sukan on Etsy. When you put it all together, you get a fireplace that looks quite similar to Mr. & Mrs. West’s. Kim and Kanye don’t have a glass door or any safety screens on their fireplace. To better protect North (and any future children, ie: “South” or “Wild-Wild”) we’d highly suggest you purchase a...
